Become a governor

Portsmouth schools need school governors - can you help?

We are looking for people to volunteer to be school governors in the city.

Being a school governor is one of the key roles within a school and its community, and you do not have to be a parent to be involved. School governors can take part in all aspects of school life and it is up to you how much you would like to be involved.

As a governor you will need to make decisions about a range of issues to improve and maintain the standard of education in a school, attend between three and six governing body meetings a year and be a member of at least one committee that looks in more detail at different aspects of governors’ work such as finance, curriculum or staff matters. You can also visit the school, help on school trips and become a “link” governor – this involves being attached to a specific class or year group.

You don't have to be an education expert to play this important role in running our schools. School governors come from many walks of life and their varied experience is an asset. They help schools to improve and raise standards, and are a key link between the school, local community, parents and the city council.

Governors are people like you
