Education Welfare Service
Last updated: 06 October 2008 16:01 UKPortsmouth Education Welfare Service works with schools, parents/carers, pupils and other agencies in an effort to reduce unnecessary absences from school.
The majority of pupils attend school regularly and enjoy it. However, some pupils do have attendance difficulties for many different reasons. Parents/carers may be aware of this, but not know who to contact for help or advice.
It is always best to talk to the school first, as good communication between parents/carers and schools will help prevent further problems arising. Early identification of attendance problems can be crucial to ensuring future good attendance.
You can also ring the Education Welfare Service to discuss any concerns you may have about your child's attendance at school, including any problems they may be experiencing.
The Role of an Education Welfare Officer- To monitor school attendance.
- To provide a link between school, parents/carers and pupils where necessary.
- To develop supportive relationships with parents/carers, schools and pupils.
- To offer advice on various issues ie bullying.
- To consult and work with other agencies to support parents/carers and pupils where expertise in a given area of need is necessary.
- To take legal action against parents if their child is not accessing an education.
