School transport - how to apply

To qualify for free transport to school, your child must attend their designated school, or one that is nearer to their home, and the distance measured by the shortest practicable walking route must be:
  • more than two miles for children under 8 years of age (Year 3 and under)
    or
  • more than three miles for children age 8 and over (Year 4 and over)

If no place is available at the designated school, free transport may be given to the next nearest school with an available place if written confirmation is provided by the headteacher of the designated school.

Change of address

If you move and wish for your child to remain at their current school assistance may be offered for pupils in Years 10 and 11 where:

  • the distance between home and school is more than three miles
    and
  • the change of address takes place after the start of the first term in Year 10
    and
  • the pupil is attending the designated (or nearer) school for the previous home address

Transport to church schools

If your child attends a church school, they will qualify for help with travelling expenses on public transport to the nearest appropriate school if:

  • they has been baptised or otherwise received into the faith of the foundation of the school
    and
  • the distance between home and school is more than the distances given above and below 6 miles (primary school) and 10 miles (secondary school)

If you have any questions about entitlement to transport, please telephone the School Transport Team on 023 9284 1345.
