The Service for Sensory Impairment comprises of Specialist Teacher Advisers, Communication Support Workers and a Paediatric Rehabilitation Officer for VI pupils. We work with sensory impaired children and students from 0 – 19 years of age, at home or other pre-school settings, in schools and colleges. Our aim is to maximise the educational opportunities for every individual child, working in partnership with parents and carers, teachers and colleagues in other agencies.
Where are we?
We are based at the Battenburg Avenue Clinic, Battenburg Avenue, North End, Portsmouth PO2 0TA. The telephone
contact number is 023 9266 3793.
Whilst most of our pupils are placed in their own local schools / special schools with support and advice and
sometimes direct teaching from the Service, some pupils are placed within our two local resourced provisions for
hearing impaired pupils, namely Penhale Nursery and Infant School and Northern Parade Junior School.
What do we do?
We work closely with colleagues in schools and with families, linking our work with that of Social Services and Health.
Our main functions include:
How Children are referred to us?
Pre-school referrals are received directly from health e.g. Hospital Audiology or Orthoptics Departments or the Early Years Support Panel
School aged pupils are usually referred to us by their school.
We guarantee to make contact after referral within 48 hours for a pre-school child or within one week for a school aged pupil.
