Portsmouth Book Awards

The Portsmouth Book Award allows young people the opportunity to decide their book of the year. Pupil judges decide the winner in three categories following extensive reading and debating.

In 2010 the process will involve 3,774 young people.

The award is run by Portsmouth Library Service and administered by the School Library Service which works closely with school staff.

The book award aims to:

• promote the enjoyment of reading, because enjoyment is one of the stepping stones to a higher standard of literacy
• foster a reading ethos both within individual schools and in the city
• draw attention to the most rewarding and accessible fiction available for the age group
• promote use of the public library
