Our policies and strategies
Last updated: 05 March 2012 11:48Policies and strategies are an important part of what we do as a council, but what is the difference between the two?
Policies
A policy can be defined as ‘a set of ideas, or a plan, of what we should, or would, do in a particular situation’. Generally, these will need to have been officially agreed by either the council, or by relevant managers, as the council’s response for that situation.
Strategies
Strategies are about the way we intend to do things to help achieve our objectives in a planned, coherent and co-ordinated way. Basically the strategic approach looks at:
- where we are now
- where we want to get to
- how we will get there; and
- how will we know when we have got there
Within the city the overall strategy for improving quality of life for local people is detailed in the Local Strategic Partnership’s Community Strategy.
So what’s the difference?
Definitions of strategies and policies vary, but for our purpose, the key difference is that a strategy aims to achieve specific objectives and sets out the approach that will be used to do so. Strategies are about actions. Policies should set out how we will respond to given situations as they arise, essentially reactive.
