Big Screen
Last updated: 05 May 2012 18:48 UKIn 2008, Portsmouth was chosen as one of eight cities to host a Big Screen by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Portsmouth screen was the first installed on the south coast and forms part of the UK’s largest network of screens known as London 2012 Live Sites.
The Live Sites are run in partnership between London 2012, the BBC and local authorities, and supported by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor, partners BT and Lloyds TSB, and supporters Cisco and Cadbury.
As part of this partnership the Big Screen has been surrounded by London 2012 branding. Further branding will be added in the coming months to Guildhall Square to help create the London 2012 ‘look and feel’. Astroturf, flags and seating will be provided at special events to transform the Guildhall Square into a venue for crowds to share the excitement of the Games. All of this means that the Big Screen and Guildhall Square are now known as the Portsmouth Live Site.
Big Screen
The Big Screen represents a major legacy from London 2012 because they are planned to operate not just for the years leading up to 2012, but for many years afterwards.
The Big Screen is great opportunity for the local community, the public and the creative community of Portsmouth, as a focus for live events as well as a place for films, animations, digital art, photographs and interactive games to get a proper public viewing. If you have any films, photographs or digital art or other material that you would like to have considered for the Big Screen, then have a look at how to get on the Big Screen.
