The Portsmouth International Port was opened in 1976 and serves both passenger and freight ferries sailing to and from destinations across the world. It is wholly owned by the council.
Some 3.5 million people travel through Portsmouth International Port each year, attracted by the excellent road links that Portsmouth has with the rest of the UK.
Its geographical position makes it the closest UK port to London and Paris.
Did you know that 70% of bananas eaten in Britain now pass through the port?
In 2006 the port’s growing reputation as a destination for cruise passengers continued when it welcomed its largest ever cruise liner. The German charter vessel ‘Albatross’ arrived en route from Leixoes in Portugal to Bremerhaven in Germany, carrying 779 passengers, keen to explore the sights of Portsmouth.
