Infectious Diseases

Public Health Officers are responsible for the prevention and investigation of certain Infectious Diseases including all types of conditions with a public health significance.

This involves interviewing those suffering with an illness, providing information and how to prevent infection, hygiene tips for the home and control measures to prevent the spread of infection in the home and in the community.

We also organise the taking of food samples, medical samples, trace contacts of those who are ill, and if necessary organise exclusion of food handlers in commercial premises.

When we investigate Infectious Diseases we are initially told about it by Doctors (GP's), Hospitals, the patients themselves and most commonly by the Consultant Physician in Health Protection.
