Support for Large Employers in Portsmouth

1.2% of employers (73) in the city employ 40% of its workforce (40,000 people) and so these major employers make a significant contribution to our local economy. Therefore Portsmouth City Council's Regeneration and Business team continues to develop its communication links and working partnerships with them to help sustain and create jobs. Some of this activity is outlined below.

MDs Briefings

These briefings were initially aimed at our major employers with MDs that lived outside of the city to provide an update on developments in Portsmouth itself.

Due to their success in providing two-communication between employers and the council they are now open to all major employer MDs. It was this forum, for example, that helped to identify a need for more large, good quality hotels in the city to meet business as well as tourist demand. This is now a specific target for new investment and the opening of the 100+ bed Tulip Inn in North Harbour is one result of the work to date.

Portsmouth Recruitment Network

This aims to provide human resources managers and professionals with the opportunity to resolve specific recruitment and retention issues and network with other companies to share best practice.

Portsmouth Recruitment Network events take place three times a year in the form of breakfast meetings.  Guest speakers give short presentations on services available to assist with recruitment and retention issues, then there is time to network with other human resources managers and professionals and share best practice.  

Portsmouth Recruitment Members are also included on a mailing list and emailed on a regular basis with information on diversity, legislation, publications and events.

Current members include FPT Industries, VT Group, Hampshire Constabulary, HM Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Defence, Portsmouth Housing Association, Warings Construction Group, The Listening Company and IBM.

Company Visits

On a proactive basis we seek to arrange meetings with our major employers and will undertake these in partnership with representatives from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), especially when companies are foreign owned or have more operations in the region.
