Services to Employers - Recruitment & Retention
Portsmouth City Council and partners have developed a number of services to assist local employers in reducing recruitment difficulties and increasing retention of their current workforce. These services are summarised below, with contact names for more information:
Pride in Pompey
Providing training for the unemployed, to give them the skills that employers want, especially in customer service, administration and IT. Trainees are often “placed” with employers as part of their training, and we can offer a “matching” service to ensure that employers can recruit someone with the right skills for their jobs.

New Deal
For employers – providing training and support for unemployed people, helping them back into work with the skills that employers want. Part of the Government’s New Deal initiative, a dedicated unit in Portsmouth City Council can identify the right recruits for your business, offer work trials and give ongoing support to you to make sure that your new employee suits your needs.

Ethnic Pride
Support and advice to employers on issues around employing people from ethnic minorities. Ethnic Pride also works with individual job seekers, and so can provide employers with potential recruits for a wide range of vacancies, and can arrange work trials.

Portsmouth Childcare Advice & Training
Information and advice for employers on childcare issues, to help in the recruitment and retention of parents with young children (aged 0-16 years). CHAT can also help if you are looking to recruit childcare workers.

Jobcentre Plus
In addition to our own services, we work very closely in partnership with Jobcentre Plus (formerly the Employment Service), who provide a full range of services to help employers meet their recruitment needs. For details, go to the Jobcentre Plus website.

University of Portsmouth Graduate Careers Service

University of Portsmouth Job Shop
This service offers employers direct contact with undergraduates actively looking for work throughout the year. There are over 13,000 undergraduates and one in three now have term-time jobs in addition to the traditional vacation jobs.
The Job Shop is based within the Student Union and so is highly visible to students. It also hosts recruitment fairs in April and October and offers companies the opportunity to hire stalls in the foyer throughout the year to promote vacancies directly to students.
