Stonewall - Workplace

People perform better when they can be themselves

Stonewall is a professional lobbying group that aims to prevent attacks on lesbians, gay men and bisexuals from ever occurring.

Stonewall also works with a whole range of agencies to address the needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the wider community.  Their Diversity Champions programme offers advice and support to over 250 organisations including IBM, Barclays, Barnardos, DTI and the Royal Navy.

Stonewall has also raised public awareness in terms of the changes to the employment regulations relating to sexual orientation through guides for both employers and employees.

Their website provides a wealth of information relating to the workplace and you can also find details of the Diversity Champion Programme which is Britain's good practice forum for lesbian and gay workplace issues that you may be interested in investigating for your company especially in view of the following facts:

  • a third of gay staff conceal their sexual orientation from their employers and co-workers
  • 55% of gay employees facing discrimination report a direct negative work impact
  • approximately 20% of gay employees facing discrimination at work will consider suicide
  • 36% of gay employees will change careers due to discrimination
  • it is estimated that 1 in 10 of the population are gay
  • the first tribunal case brought in 2005 against an employer cost them £35,000

Visit the Stonewall 'Workplace' website to find out more, or call one of their team on 020 7593 1850.
