Celebrating the Games locally
Last updated: 11 January 2012 09:33 UKAs hosts of the Olympics, the UK is required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to develop a programme of cultural events.
Launched in 2008, the Cultural Olympiad is a four-year celebration of the diverse cultures within the UK to encourage every community to take part and celebrate London 2012.
To ensure that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are a UK wide celebration, a number of programmes have been developed under the umbrella of the Cultural Olympiad. In addition to this, the Live Sites project (Big Screens), Torch Relay, and Open Weekend celebrations are additional ways of bringing the Games to local communities.
Part of Portsmouth’s Cultural Olympiad celebrations will be raising the city’s profile as a Great Literary City. The Dickens 2012 programme of events and community engagement celebrating the 200th birthday of Portsmouth born author Charles Dickens will be instrumental in this.
