Portsmouth museums update

Here’s the latest list of exciting events and activities happening in museums across the city, to help keep you and your kids happy during the colder months.
Holocaust Memorial Day - Sunday 27 January
Have a look round the D-Day Museum for free next weekend, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. There will be a display and two special talks about the Holocaust, and how it has been explained and remembered over the years.
The first talk will be at 11am with Rebecca James, Masters Student at Portsmouth University, who will be discussing 'Representing the Holocaust to Children'. The second talk will be held at 2pm with university lecturer Dr Christine Berberich, who will be talking about 'The Holocaust in contemporary German culture and literature'.
There will also be a Holocaust Memorial Day service at 12pm, in front of the D-Day Museum by the Holocaust Memorial Day tree, which will be attended by Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas. Everybody is welcome to attend, usual opening times apply (10am until 5pm).
Adult workshop: weaving pure and simple - Tuesday 12 February
Here's your chance to have a go at weaving at this basic workshop for beginners with Ann Richards, whose stunning textile work is on show at the City Museum.
Using simple, lightweight equipment and both traditional and unconventional materials, you will be able experiment with colour and pattern to produce lots of different fabrics.
Adults aged 16 plus are welcome to come along, all materials and equipment will be provided. The workshop is from 10am until 4pm at the City Museum, and cost £30 (£10 with a Portsmouth Leisure Card). Booking is required as places are limited, so please call 023 9282 7261 to secure your spot.
Bugs and butterflies family activity - Saturday 16 February
Create amazing bugs and butterflies with Melanie Tomlinson, and be inspired by her beautiful tin sculptures. Use brightly coloured metal foils to create creatures based on insects from the museum’s collection or just simply let your imagination run wild.
It's great fun for children aged eight and over, and costs £2.50 per child (free with Portsmouth Leisure Card). Adults go free and can take up to three accompanying children each. There is no booking required, just drop into one of the sessions at the City Museum; 10am – 12noon or 1pm – 3pm.
Play! Make! Do! half term art club - Wednesday 20, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 February
Get along to the Aspex Gallery and take a look at the process of creating works of art. You'll get the chance to experiment with lots of different materials and techniques too. Children aged eight to 13 are welcome, the workshop cost £15 per day (£40 for all three days) and runs from 11am until 3pm. Hat-tastic! family activity - Thursday 21 February
Join H2oh! Education and create fantastic hats and headdresses inspired by the exhibition Make! Believe! Make! at the City Museum. This workshop is open to all children aged five and over, with up to three children per accompanying adult. The session is free and there is no need to book, just pop in between 1pm and 3pm.
