Portsmouth City Council is inviting you to take part in this year’s Local Democracy Week, running from Monday 15 until Friday 19 October.

Thursday 18 October sees several events, starting with the Lord Mayor’s Schools Debate at Portsmouth Guildhall, from 9.30am until 11.30am.

Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas said:

“I’m particularly looking forward to chairing the schools debate and seeing what ideas the students come up with by way of new political parties and key issues”.

Later in the day you can find out ‘How Parliament Works’ with a session run by Parliamentary Outreach and featuring City MPs Mike Hancock and Penny Mordaunt in the Menuhin Room, Central Library, from 3pm until 5pm.

This is followed by ‘How Europe Works’ with European Outreach, featuring MEPs Catherine Bearder (Lib Dem) and Keith Taylor (Green) in the Menuhin Room, Central Library, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.

Meet your local councillor and find out more about their role in the local community at one of the sessions will take place on:

• Friday 19 October, 10am – 11am: Meet Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson (Milton Ward) at Pure Ground Community Cafe, next to Milton Village Hall
• Friday 19 October, 10am – 11am: Meet Cllr Neill Young (Copnor Ward) at Mardin Cafe on the corner of Copnor Road and Mayfield Road
