Give your home a hug and keep warm this winter
Last updated: 01 October 2012 10:04
No need to be left out in the cold this winter, as Portsmouth City Council steps in to help keep residents cosy with our Keep Warm and Carry On campaign.
In Portsmouth between 150 and 300 people die each winter as a result of cold related illnesses.
Most are aged over 65, and these people died largely as a result of respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and circulatory conditions such as heart attack or a stroke. All conditions which are aggravated by the cold.
The important thing is that many of these deaths could have been prevented.
Research shows that thousands of houses throughout the city would be able to reduce energy costs, save hundreds of pounds and most importantly, lives, each year - with simple energy efficiency improvements such as loft and cavity wall insulation.
As part of our Keep Warm and Carry On campaign, we are offering residents the chance to get cosy with a variety of offers to help them keep warm during the colder period
Don't have a heating system? We may be able to loan you some equipment, or offer grant or loan assistance to help with the installation of central heating, or new double glazed windows. We may even provide some temporary accommodation whilst a system is installed for you.
For a limited time only we can also offer FREE cavity wall and/or loft insulation, as well as many other works to make properties safe and warm.
There are a variety of grants or loans available for people of all backgrounds, not just those on a low income. We can even help with finding a suitable contractor to carry out the work, and inspect the quality once works are completed.
Councillor Steve Wylie, Cabinet Member for Housing said:
" Our winter warmth campaign is about letting people know whatever their age and whether they are working or not, we can help them heat their homes more efficiently."
"Whether it's through a loan, a grant or simple advice, we're here to help you stay warm this winter."
