Kites fly high in Southsea sky
Last updated: 22 August 2012 15:56
Fly like the wind towards Southsea Common from Saturday 25 – Monday 27 August, as the Portsmouth International Kite Festival, swoops into the city to celebrate its 21st birthday.
Jointly organised by Portsmouth City Council and The Kite Society of Great Britain, it promises to be more spectacular than ever with over a hundred invited kite fliers from 4 continents travelling to this year’s event, including fliers from Singapore, Kuwait, Australia and New Zealand alongside a superb selection of European and British kite fliers.
The Festival was recently listed as one of the 23 biggest kite festivals in the world and was also recently voted a “Great of Great Britain” event.
Join us to see the sky come alive! There will be a colourful demonstration of kites including swarms of snakes, frogs, lizards, whales, jesters, fish, salamanders and so much more. Many of these expert kite fliers have been coming to the kite festival for years and they always put on their best display of beautiful kites both in scheduled arena events from 10am – 5pm and in free flying throughout the event.
Alongside this amazing flying display there will be a host of family activities to enjoy, including crafts, free children’s kite workshop, an on site fun fair, food stands for every palette, and the Wind Gallery, featuring Aeolian instruments which use the wind to produce beautiful sounds and music.
Councillor Lee Hunt, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said:
“Southsea Common is the perfect location for this prestigious event, with the vibrant colours and patterns in the sky complimenting the lush greens and blues of Southsea Seafront.”
“The International Kite Festival is always one of the best events held in Portsmouth every year, there’s so much to see and do, it’s a real honour to host the event in our city, and a great day out for the whole family.”
