Council given a new look
After the 1 May election, the Lib Dems have 19 members and the Independents two.
The council will continue to be led by Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson.
But it will have a new look, with a shuffling of portfolios, some new faces and a new system of scrutiny panels to keep an eye on decisions.
The ruling executive, which makes most of the council's day-to-day decisions, will now be known as the cabinet, as part of a bid to make the system more understandable for residents.
Its members, and their responsibilities, are as follows:
- Cllr Vernon-Jackson - leader of the council
- Cllr Hugh Mason - deputy leader, resources
- Cllr Leo Madden - deputy leader, health & social care
- Cllr Mike Hancock - planning, regeneration and economic development
- Cllr Jason Fazackarley - environment and community safety
- Cllr Eleanor Scott - education, children and young people
- Cllr Terry Hall - culture and leisure
- Cllr Steven Wylie - housing
- Cllr Lynne Stagg - traffic and transportation
Cllr Vernon-Jackson told the annual meeting: "I will continue to work for the good of the city."
He announced five new scrutiny panels to examine decisions, again designed to make the council's work easier to understand.
These will roughly mirror cabinet responsibilities, with the following briefs:
- education, children and young people
- traffic, environment and community safety
- economic development & leisure
- housing and social care
- finance and resources
Previously, scrutiny panels were not fixed on particular subjects.
