Portsmouth Central Library holds the largest Naval collection held within a public library within the UK and has a large local history section containing books, photographs and numerical periodicals.

Portsmouth City Museum has a permanent exhibition relating to Portsmouth's development over the centuries and incorporates the Records Office which holds documents from the 14th century. This includes private archives (family papers, businesses), Diocesan archives (church records), public records and historic archives of Portsmouth City Council, as well as thousands of local maps and plans, photographs and picture postcards.
