Volunteer

The Olympic and Paralympic Games will offer many opportunities for local residents to become involved.

The official London 2012 Volunteer Programme opens for applications in 2010. In access of 70,000 volunteers will be needed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Each successful applicant will be invited to attend training sessions to help with the role that they will be undertaking. Most of the opportunities for the London 2012 Volunteer Programme will be in London and the Olympic and Paralympic venues throughout the UK.

The key requirements to become a volunteer are:

• be 18 years of age by 1 January 2012
• be able to volunteer a minimum of ten days at either, or both, of the Games
• be eligible to volunteer in the UK in accordance with UK immigration laws
• commit to attend a minimum of three training sessions prior to the Games
• pass certain security and background checks

Some examples of volunteering opportunities within Portsmouth could include:

• helping during events as marshals and general support from now to 2012 
• volunteering at pre-games training camps in the lead up to 2012
• providing language services
• providing specialist medical care to the training camp
