Recreational offer
Last updated: 18 August 2010 15:30 UKWe recognise that the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will provide an inspiration and be a focal point for the development of sport in the city over the coming years.
The refurbished Mountbatten Centre is a fantastic facility enabling local residents greater access to sports and in particular swimming as it now has an Olympic sized swimming pool.
To coincide with this and to further encourage swimming participation we have signed up to the Government initiative of free swimming for the over 60's and under 16's. We are looking into other programmes to encourage greater participation in all sports will be announced as details emerge.
In addition to increasing participation, the support network needs to be developed and this includes volunteering, coaching and leadership roles. We are looking at ways to increase the opportunity for people from Portsmouth to get training and experience in these areas.
Finally we want to identify the stars of tomorrow and so a scheme to help identify young talent is going to be developed to enable them to reach their potential. We will also be looking to see if there are ways to develop and coordinate sponsorship packages for these young sportsmen and sportswomen to assist them with their training.
