Business and investment
Last updated: 18 August 2010 12:54 UKThe benefits of the 2012 Games go beyond sport itself and their venues. There will be significant business and inward investment opportunities that the south east is well placed to take advantage of.
In addition to the many construction contracts for the building industry to build the various venues and training facilities across the country, the tourism/visitor related sectors will also see increased business during and following the Games as a result of the world-wide focus on London and the UK.
Given Portsmouth’s proximity to London, its world-renowned attractions and naval heritage the city will have more visitors as a result of the Games. In addition to this we have various training facilities in the city that have been approved by London 2012 for teams to train in in the lead up to the Games. This will also benefit the city’s tourism and visitor economy.
As with SeaBritain 2005, we are keen that Portsmouth’s wider economy also benefits. Then, in addition to all the major events such as the International Festival of the Sea (IFOS) and the Fleet Review, there were others focused on ensuring our local marine industry could also take advantage of the increased profile of the city. These were lead by us and included an international buyer mission for Hampshire based companies to meet potential new customers from overseas and a careers day at IFOS with thousands of local school children given free entry to the event.
This means business and inward investment is one of the priority areas for our 2012 Games related activities.
