In 2008, Portsmouth was chosen as one of eight cities to host a Big Screen by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). At present there are 21 Big Screens across the UK with more being planned for the coming years. The Portsmouth screen forms part of the UK’s largest network of screens, which will also have interactive capabilities to enable cities to link to each other.

The Big Screens will represent a major legacy from London 2012 because they are planned to operate not just for the years leading up to 2012, but for many years afterwards. They will show a range of local information and news, along with cultural, sporting, education and community events. Our aim is to encourage members from the local community to get involved and support the Big Screen as much as possible.

Key to the success of the Big Screen is the development of key partnerships that will help us create a varied and interesting mix of films. This will include local organisations, schools, colleges, universities, arts and theatre groups, volunteer groups and many more. For more information on this see how you can get involved.

The £400,000 screen project has been funded by LOCOG and will be given to Portsmouth to use well beyond the 2012 Games. The project is a partnership between the LOCOG, local councils and the BBC. Part of our agreement with them is to protect the London 2012 branding, commercial activities and ambush marketing as well as adhering to BBC Editorial Guidelines.

There are strict guidelines for the protection of both the London 2012 brand and for the sponsors of London 2012. We are responsible for ensuring that we strictly control third party use of the brand and ensure that the sponsors and licensee’s rights are honoured.

It must also be remembered that the agreement does not grant us any rights to use the London 2012, Olympic or Paralympic emblems or anything similar to it to ‘dress’ the Live Site or promote it.
